CUSAI / VAI League 2007-08

The CUSAI VAI Colleges and Universities League received an increased number of team entries in 2007/08, showing the growth of volleyball in more colleges and universities. The 2006/07 Finals were won by NUI Maynooth women and DCU men, however neither teams were able to reach this year's Finals day, meaning there was to be new names on the Cups in the competitions 2nd year of running. The 2007/08 Final day took place on Thursday March 6th in UCD.

The Semi Finals opened proceedings with UCD on the end of a forfeit result from Athlone IT, giving them a place in the Final automatically. Thier opponents were decided in the following Semi Final where an IT Carlow side held out Intervarsity Plate Champions DCU for a 2-0 win.

In the men's Semi Finals, Trinity proved too strong for a spirited GMIT side in their 1st set, with the 2nd set finishing closer, thanks to a late revival by the Galway men. The 2nd Semi Final pitted UCC against Intervarsity Cup Semi Finalists, IT Carlow. In a close game, the Munster side picked up yet another 2-0 result on the day, showing their strengths in attack and defence.

The women's Final was the first of the Finals to take place, with a stronger looking UCD boasting many 1st and 2nd Division players. However they were to be surprised by a more solid looking Carlow side, who attacked well on the outside and opposite positions. Some unforced errors by UCD also helped Carlow to win the 1st set. Carlow continued to hold out UCD's revived challenge in the 2nd set, and were themselves picking of points in more ways than they did starting out. A somewhat surprise win for the Carlow girls over a more experienced UCD team.

The men's Final between Trinity and UCC started as a 1-sided affair with Trinity's attack helping them to a comprehensive win in the 1st set. In the 2nd set, they got to match point with their opponents still on 18. But Trinity's main threat in attack was in the back court and UCC took advantage by scoring endlessly without reply to overlap the Trinity side and claim an emphatic comeback set win 26-24. The tie-break unfortunately did not live up to the performance from the 2nd set as Trinity once again dominated to claim the men's title for 2007/08.
