Statement 8th October 2020

Volleyball Ireland continues to closely monitor the current Coronavirus pandemic and is following guidance from the Government’s Expert Group for Sport’s Resilience & Recovery framework published on September 18th.

The Government’s Living with Covid plan permits National Governing Bodies to operate their Senior Club Championship at Level 3. Therefore, the adult National League will begin as planned this coming weekend (October 10th, 11th).

However, the Board of Volleyball Ireland recognises and respects that members of our community may have concerns about playing, training and travelling to and from Volleyball activity at this time.

With this in mind, the Board have directed that clubs located in a Level 3 county, can request a postponement of their match, if they are not comfortable fulfilling the fixture (ref: Competition Rule 5.10). The process for the postponement request will be communicated with Club Secretaries in due course.

The health and safety of the Volleyball Ireland community is our priority and we are determined to be proactive regarding precautions to limit the spread of the Coronavirus.

More information on the Volleyball Ireland protocols as well as HSE approved guidance and advice can be found at www.volleyballireland.com/coronavirus.

Ahead of this weekend’s fixtures players are reminded that Gardai travel checkpoints are in place nationwide and teams should consider potential delays in their travel plans. Travel Authorisation exemption letters have been distributed to all licensed players, referees and coaches.

Ends.

Competition Rule 5.10:
In the event that either team deems the weather or other conditions too dangerous to travel to a match, and an appropriate national authority has officially issued a travel/safety warning, the opposing team and match officials should be informed. The Match should be postponed, and details sent to the Competitions & Development Commission to review, including a copy of the official advice. If it is subsequently deemed that there was no travel/safety issue, the team refusing to travel shall be deemed to have withdrawn from the Match without authorisation and will forfeit the Match.
