Boys A Final Report (February 13th, Sligo Grammar School)

In their first year of affiliation to the VAI, Loreto Community School from Milford have won in its debut appearance in a VAI Championships Final. Renowned for their success in Community Games over recent years, the Milford school continued with their winning ways and have sparked up a bright future for Irish boys volleyball in the North West of Ireland

Milford wasted no time in setting a foot hold in the match by racing into a 10-0 lead, thanks to strong serving from Luke Barrett, and equally to Christy McCaffery unleasing what was to be the first of many stinging attacks in this encounter. Drumshanbo revived with later scores from captain Jason Glynn (ace), Dylan McGowan and Adrian Foy (kills), however as soon as Milford's main hitters in McCafferty and Conor Ferry returned to the front court, the pendulum swung in their favour once again, helping them to a 10-point win in the first set.

For the considerably large attendance, at least for those who travelled from Leitrim, a repeat of the 1st set was not desired. And things looked better for the Drumshanbo following as it was indeed their team who started much the brigher in the 2nd set with David Coyle serving well and Jason Glynn playing the captain's part yet again with a stuff block against Milford's main threat, Christy McCafferty. Confidence was evidently building with the Drumshanbo side and led 17-14, assisted by Dylan McGowan's front court heroics and Daniel Egan's serving.

Milford managed however to close in on the opposition and at 17-21, when Drumshanbo krept back in front, the Donegal side called an important time out. On return to the court, they scored 3 successive points and then another 4 likewise, with Drumshanbo getting 1 in between. At 23-23, it was Drumshanbo's turn to call a time out. Both sides traded points afterwards, with Drumshanbo's McGowan and Milford's Ferry killing, but the day was to eventually belong the first-time finalists in Milford as they edged 2 points clear to win the match at 26-24. For his strong attacking display, Christy McCafferty was awarded with the match MVP award.
