Cork Mixed Volleyball League 2011 Report
The final day of fixtures in the 2011 Cork Mixed League took place on Saturday 9th April in CIT. The league which started in January was contested by 9 teams over the course of 5 Saturday’s in CIT. The format involved each team playing each other once in the first round with teams then divided into Cup and Plate competitions for the 2nd round, the top 5 progressed to Cup and bottom 4 to Plate.
There were many closely contested matches throughout the competition and a really good standard of play on display by all teams. In the final day’s action both the Cup and Plate were very much up for grabs, with 3 teams still in contention for the Cup and two for the Plate. In both, it came down to the very last match of the day to determine the ultimate winners.
The Lakers from Killarney, runners up in last years Cup Competition, suffered a loss to a strong Mallow side in their first game of the day, which put a dent on their title aspirations for this year. Mallow in their next game however succumbed to a 2 – 0 defeat to a very spirited Rebels side. This lined up an exciting finale to the competition with the final game of the day pitting the Lakers against still in contention Bishopstown. The game did not disappoint and from start to finish was a nail bitingly close affair. Bishopstown took the first set, 27 – 25 and started strong in the 2nd also. The Lakers dug deep and began to find the space on their opponent’s court with some strong attacking play. They took the 2nd set 25 – 18 to set up a 3rd and deciding set. The final set came right down to the wire with both teams battling hard and neither relinquishing their claim on the Cup title. The Lakers eventually had the edge and took the deciding set 26 -24 and with it their first Cork Mixed League Cup Title.
The Plate competition too came down to the last game of the day. Grasshoppers and CIT, both unbeaten in the Plate so far, played another 3 set thriller to determine the outright winner. Grasshoppers were comfortable in the 1st set notching up a 25 – 10 win. CIT fought back in the 2nd and rallied hard to take the set 25 – 23. The 3rd set was evenly contested, Grasshoppers just managed to pull away at the end and take the set 25 – 20 and with it awarded the Plate winners.
Congratulations to all the teams that took part in this year’s competition and who all contributed so much to make it such an enjoyable event. Thanks also to CIT Volleyball Club for hosting the League again this year and assisting with set up each morning of the League. We now look forward to the 2012 Cork Mixed League which I’m sure will bring more excitement, fun and plenty of action to the CIT Volleyball Courts!
