Transition Year Girls SpikeBall Leaders

Award Programme

This successful and very exciting programme by the Volleyball Association of Ireland and supported by the Irish Sport Council “Women in Sport” initiative is well into its second year.
The first year was an overwhelming success with 340 Transition Year students countrywide receiving The SpikeBall Leaders Awards Certificate for 2008 and over 3,000 Primary school students participating in the programme from a total of 25 courses delivered.
This year we were overwhelmed by schools requesting the programme, for 18 courses we had over 60 applications.

This programme is aimed at girls in Transition Year programmes in Post Primary school across Ireland.
The aim of this initiative is to establish and deliver a Transition Year Girls SpikeBall Leadership Award Programme.  Transition Year girls will become leaders in introducing an adapted Volleyball game (SpikeBall) to junior pupils in their own school, local primary schools and in the local community.  This initiative will help to develop partnerships between post primary school involved and local primary school and/or clubs.

Course Delivery - 6 hour Leadership Course, including How to Coach SpikeBall, Refereeing, Administration, Health & Safety and PRO.

Student Coaching - 6 weeks (1 hour per week) in local primary schools.

Blitz - TY Students organise a Blitz for all the Primary children taking part in programme.

Monitoring - The programme is monitored by programme staff.

Certification - Students receive Transition Year Girls SpikeBall Leaders Award Certificate on full completion of course.

The 2009/10 Transition Year Girls SpikeBall Leadership Award Course will be delivered to the following schools. TY Leaders will be coaching their local Primary Schools:
