Impressive Ukraine

Ireland’s second match at the CEV u22 Women’s European Championship Qualifier’s ended in defeat against an impressive Ukraine.

Boasting no less than 11 players at 6feet +, it was always an upward task for the young Irish team who showed brilliant determination throughout the encounter. DVC Lions Middle Laura Connolly in particular excelling at the net with successive Monster Blocks in the second set.

Naas VC Libero Grace Moloney was in good form with strong passing, with allowed Ireland to cultivate some nice patterns in attack with Shannon Kehoe combining with Sophie Quinlivan Nolan well. Trinity College’s Lara McNichols also joined with good attack and neat passing when at the back.

Newbridge Opposite Emma Byrne was finding success hitting through the tall block, but the quality of Ukraine’s defence, athleticism and sheer technical skills meant landing the ball was quite the challenge. Anastassia Kurcher was incredible with 14points of her own which included 4 aces.

Despite the scoreline, Ireland gave a good account of themselves going toe-to-toe with one of Europe’s top teams. It will be no surprise when they place well at the Finals in Italy next Summer.

Final Score: Ukraine 3:0 Ireland (25-5, 25-12, 25-9).
