National Pathway Overview
Our pathway progresses through the Regional Development Centres (RDCs), into U18 squads, and then on to U20 and Senior squads.
- Regional Development Centres will be based in Clare/Galway, Colaiste Muire Ennis, Dungarvan College, Portlaoise College & TUD Tallaght
- RDCs (aimed at U16 players) focus on developing strong technical skills and preparing athletes for the high-performance pathway.
- U18 squads are normally selected via open trials held in May for the following year. Players who are 17 in the trial year are not eligible. Multiple squads may be formed depending on numbers.
- U20 and Senior squads are selected by Head Coaches based on performances of players already in the pathway. Players outside the pathway may still be granted an invitation to a trial training through league match performances or by submitting scouting videos.
Eligibility
To compete internationally for Ireland, players must hold a valid Irish passport. However, U18 trials and RDCs are open to players who are in the process of securing one (with proof of application).
- Overseas players: Volleyball Ireland welcomes Irish passport holders based abroad. Players must ensure their Federation of Origin is Volleyball Ireland; if not, an application for transfer must be submitted and approved by the FIVB.
Missed Trials
If a player misses U18 trials or only begins playing after the trial date, they may still apply for a trial training by providing:
- A letter of recommendation from their coach
- Video clips of recent match play
The relevant Head Coach will then decide if they meet the criteria for an invitation.
Requesting a Trial at U20 or Senior Level
Players wishing to be considered for a trial at U20 or Senior level must contact Gabriel Akinwande at [email protected].
Required:
- A recent match recording of the player
- A letter of recommendation from a coach
