2023 Senior Championship FINALS

It’s that time of year again!

The Senior Schools Volleyball Championships will come to an end this Thursday, December 14th at the National Indoor Arena, Dublin.

Starting back in September, 121 Senior teams signed up hoping to be in attendance this week. A total of 334 matches in the last 10 weeks provided us with some of the best volleyball we have come to see at this level.

Once again we have some spectacular match ups in store.

Girls Senior A, Match time 10.30am

Two powerhouses of volleyball will face off once again in St Mary’s vs Holy Family. In fact these two schools have contested 6 of the last 11 finals together. (Most recently in 2021-22 when Holy Family came out victorious) St Mary’s may hold the record for the most Senior A wins but it is Holy Family that are going for three in a row!

Boys Senior A, Match time 10.30am

For the first time in over 20 years a Dublin school will line out in the boys top competition. This Sutton team has come so close over both Junior and u16s and now they get to deservedly showcase their talents on the big stage. They will face a strong opponent in Patrician HS as they attempt to go for back to back titles.

Girls Senior B Match time 1.00pm

Kilkenny City VS are back once again! After winning C Division last year they have worked their way through the B and now find themselves on the cusp of another National title. Hoping to stop them is Colaiste An Eachreidh. It’s a first time appearance on Finals Day for the girls from Athenry but with a host of local club players and even an international player they will hope to use that atmosphere to drive onto glory.

Boys Senior B, Match time 1.00pm

It’s an all Cork derby in Boys B!!! After a long hiatus from Cork schools at the finals, they have exploded back onto the scene this year. Douglas CS along with Colaiste Chriost Ri both find themselves at their first ever finals. Whatever the outcome we are in for some history making this Thursday.

Girls Senior C, Match time 2.30pm

No strangers to finals are Mountrath CS and Presentation Kilkenny SS. Both schools have tasted success over the last two years albeit at the young age group. Both sets of players are also under the guidance of coaches that recently returned from the CEV conference in Bulgaria. No doubt, lots of learnings are being implemented to the benefit of the teams.

Boys Senior C, Match time 2.30pm

Completing our finalists this Thursday are teams from Cork and Meath. Colaiste Na Hinse arrived into schools volleyball just a few short years ago but have been making waves ever since. They will be hoping to bring back a first title come 4pm. Davis College, Mallow were the last Cork school to be at a final back in 2016/2017. Losing out in a thrilling five setter that day they will be looking to ensure the cup heads south this year.

*matches will begin as the previous one finishes

Volleyball Ireland wish all teams the best of luck and also thank everyone that took part in the Senior Championships this year. It has been another year of growth and another year of volleyball standards improving.
