UCD and Santry Calypso got their title defences off to winning starts, with victories over DVC Bravo and Net Force Cork respectively.
An Evgenni Menschikov inspired UCD were clinical running out straight set winners 25-16, 25-20, 25-18. Last year’s runners up Aer Lingus won’t let the students get away from them though, as they also opened up with a comfortable win 25-15, 25-21, 25-19 down in Cork. Elsewhere in the Men’s Premier Galway defeated newcomers Dalkey Devils in a close game 3:1 whilst DVC Abu beat Trinity College by the same score.
In the Women’s Premier Calypso manoeuvred a tricky match in Cork 3:1, which saw a debut for Irish International Maria Jones, following her move from Munster Thunder. DVC Lions were impressive on the road in Belfield seeing off UCD 3:1 whilst Gardians came from two down to be a much-improved Trinity 15-10 in the tie break…positive signs from the students.
The remaining Women’s Premier game will be the season-opening Game of the Week with debutants Balbriggan and Tallaght Rockets going toe-to-toe at the Sport Ireland Indoor Arena on Wednesday evening.
