Gormally & Cheviron Have a Blast at Bettystown Beach. Third seeds Miriam Gormally & Melissa Cheviron came through a gruelling day of tense, exciting and dramatic Beach Volleyball action to claim the inaugural VLY Beach Tour 3* Women’s title at a packed Bettystown Beach Centre Court. The eight team tournament featured Ireland’s top teams with the experienced duo overpowering Lithuanian sisters Giedre & Zydre Guobyte in two sets (26-24, 21-17), with the first of those see-sawing between both pairs. But it was the experienced duo who won out in the end with Cheviron’s dynamic power at the net, and Gormally’s deft touch, causing issues for the Guobyte’s defence. The winners didn’t have it all their own way with Zydre’s accurate service game driving her team into a 4nil lead, but the pair from Gardian’s VC couldn’t keep the momentum and the Ireland/Malta partnership climbed back in to the game getting stronger as the much wore on. An excited and exhausted Gormally said, “we’re really delighted to win out in the end. It was a tough match and a tough day with close games throughout. We had some really hard games in the pools in the Semi Final and I think that put us in good stead for the final.” The eventual champions overcame a tight and tense semi final versus Indre Simkute and Eliska Cechova 23-21, 22-20 which could have easily gone either way, just after the Guobyte’s saw off the Mexican twins Paola & Mariana Rosas 21-15, 21-12, who took the Bronze medals 21-11, 24-22. The Men’s section was won by Janusz Stolarek & Pietr Piecek overcoming the Brazil/Lithuania partnership of Felipe Viana Wanderson and Edgaras Valavicius, cruising the first set 21-9 and were relatively comfortable in the second 21-15. In fact, the winners didn’t lose a set all day with a clinical display of hard hitting. The win was particularly satisfying for Stolarek who has two runner up places on this year’s tour. Taking third place were the Aer Lingus pairing of Adrian Margol and Marcin Szklarek who defeated Pawel Iwinski & Severyn Furmanski 21-23, 21-15, 15-12.
