Volleyball Ireland are recruiting for the vacant positions of Junior Women’s & Junior Men’s National Team Head Coach (for players born after Jan 1, 2005).


Whilst we require separate Head Coaches for each programme, the job descriptions are the same to represent the consistent approach across Ireland’s National Team operations.


The Head Coach will work with the Senior National Team Coaching panel and other junior national team & development centre pathway coaches to deliver an athlete centred performance programme within the Volleyball Ireland High Performance Framework.


The role will involve leading teams to CEV Zonal Championships, as well as identifying other competitions and tournaments to attend, that will aid the holistic and long-term development of players. This may include CEV European Championships Qualifiers and Finals.


About the Role

We are seeking a Head Coach to build a team that will provide high quality leadership, inspiration and training to a group of between 12 & 18 young players.

The Head Coach will lead Ireland’s challenge in the CEV Small Countries Association u20 Championships in 2023, whilst participating in other invitational competitions and CEV European Championship competitions.


National Team Training Squads typically train on the first weekend of every month, as well as other performance camps during the year both in Ireland and abroad.

We want someone who is dedicated, passionate and delivers high standards, who can ensure both on court improvement in player performance, and who can embed a life-long love of Volleyball in young players.


The Head Coach will be supported by the High Performance Commission from a strategic perspective and Volleyball Ireland staff from an operational perspective. This will include help with hall bookings, flights and other administrative tasks.

Volleyball Ireland are also putting in place sports science based supports such as S&C and nutrition programmes and education for players.


Key Responsibilities

• Collaborate with the Performance Director and Senior National Team Coach to devise and deliver a periodic programme of player development including identifying appropriate tournaments and partnerships to best develop the team and players
• Adhere and contribute to the principles of Volleyball Ireland’s High Performance Framework
• Work closely with the Senior National Team Coach to identify and nurture players with Senior National Team potential
• Provide first rate coaching and leadership to the players being a positive role model for them
• Identify individual player needs and work with external resources to further player development (S&C, Nutrition etc)
• Develop, mentor and support assistant coaches
• Evaluate and record player performance
• Work alongside National Development Manager to identify potential players from younger age groups that may benefit for participation with this age group
• Be part of the player selection panel during open trials – to be held on Sunday October 2nd in Limerick.
• Communicate with all stakeholders within the programme including parents


The Successful Coach

• Will be dedicated to the development of volleyball in Ireland
• Will align with Volleyball Ireland’s core values and principles of LTPD
• Will work within the High Performance Framework
• Will be organised with a track record of developing and implementing a coaching programme
• Have sound understanding of modern-day coaching practices within volleyball including video analysis and scouting tools
• Have the ability to travel nationally and internationally if required
• Should have a formal Volleyball coaching qualification
• Will undergo necessary Garda Vetting & Safeguarding training


Further Information

• Coaches will be assigned a 2-year cycle from October 2022, starting with an open trial event for players on Sunday October 2nd.
• This is a voluntary role.
• Appropriate expenses will be provided to the successful candidates to cover out of pocket costs.
