Ireland & Italy Agree Unique Partnership

Volleyball Ireland are delighted to announce a historic and unique partnership with the Italian Volleyball Federation (FIPAV), that will provide innovative support to help Ireland’s Volleyball growth and development.

The agreement will focus on knowledge transfer to assist player development, coach education & organisational capacity.

The programme will see Ireland’s youth teams spend time training alongside the best talents in Italy, whilst FIPAV will provide an expert coach educator to deliver workshops for Ireland’s coaching community. Volleyball Ireland staff and volunteers will also spend time learning from FIPAV’s various departments in key areas such as long-term player development, event management and youth programmes.

The concept is the brainchild of FIPAV President Giuseppe Manfredi and endorsed by the Confederation of European Volleyball (CEV). President Manfredi commented,

“We are really happy to continue our cooperation with the Irish federation. In recent months we signed this technical cooperation agreement, which I am convinced will bring benefits to both our organizations. I wish the athletes and technical staff, our guests at Pavesi Centre, a great experience, useful for their personal and sports growth.”

“This historic deal fully reflects the CEV’s wish and vision to foster and facilitate mutually beneficial cooperation and exchanges of knowledge and experiences among members of the European Volleyball family, knowing that such an approach is pivotal to the further growth of the game across the continent and that together we are so much stronger and better than when working on our own,” said CEV President Aleksandar Boričić. “We have gone through some challenging times lately where the importance of solidarity and mutual support has literally come to the fore like never before.”

Conversations around a potential partnership began at the 2021 CEV General Assembly in Katowice, where Ireland presented to Congress as the Best Practice National Federation, providing an overview of their recent growth and future ambitions.

Volleyball Ireland President Clodagh NicCanna helped broker the deal, at the recent FIVB and CEV Congress in Arnhem. She added, “We are honoured and excited to be working with FIPAV on this project that gives Ireland an amazing opportunity to learn from the world’s best youth development programme, and undoubtedly one of the most successful Volleyball nations on earth. We are eternally grateful for this chance to grow our players, coaches and organisation.”

The initiative begins this week with Ireland’s Junior Women’s squad (u22 & u20) arriving in Milan for a weeklong training camp at the prestigious Pavesi Centre, where they will train and learn from FIPAV’s famous Club Italia, which currently features World & European age group champions.

They will be under the guidance of Head Coach Marco Mencarelli who added, “We are looking forward to welcoming the Irish delegation and spending some days together, dedicated to volleyball. I am sure that for our girls and the Irish girls, this collaboration will be a formative experience. I have always believed that the comparison between different realities can strongly help both athletes and coaches in their own growth path.”

Ireland’s u22 & u20 Women’s teams will be competing in the upcoming CEV European Championships for the first time.

Italy and Ireland have met once in International Volleyball, at the recent u22 Men’s European Championship qualifiers, when the future winners took a 3nil victory in Rome.
