King & Queen of the Court

The VLY Beach Tour are delighted to reveal details of this weekend’s King of the Court event – the first of its kind in Ireland.

The unique format is based on the famous Utrecht Sportworx event which has become a global sensation with Intl dates in Australia, Brazil & the Middle East and now endorsed by FIVB and CEV.

Ireland’s first National Series King of the Court will be ran on a trial basis at Balbriggan Beach, Country Dublin, and will be open to 10 Men’s Teams and 12 Women’s Teams.

The tournament starts at 10am sharp with each match timed to 45mins. You can enter on a first come, first served basis here.

All players must have a valid Volleyball Ireland player license which can be purchased on the JustGo site.

VLY CEO Gary Stewart said, “First of all I’d like to thank Gijs and the team at Sportworx for sharing their expertise to help us deliver this innovative event which will really showcase Beach Volleyball in a new location for the tour. Bringing this format in is about growing the game and moving forward. Whilst we’re testing the water in Yr1 we see massive potential to use King of the Court to grow interest in the sport. Fingal Sport and Council have also been very supportive and we can’t wait to show the local community what Beach Volleyball is all about.”

About King of the Court:

King of the court is played with a total of 5 teams, 2 will be in the field, the others will be waiting their turn outside the Court. There is a kingside of the court and a challengers side. Which team will start where is determined by the drawing of lots. Each rally will start with a serve from the team at the challengers side. Each team is free to pick which player will serve.

If the team on the challengers side wins the rally, they move to the kingside and the other team will leave the court and will have to wait their turn to serve again on the challengers side. If the team on the kingside wins the rally, they will stay on the kingside and get 1 point. Teams are only able to score points while they are on the kingside. When a team on the challengers side makes a mistake during the serve, they’re out and need to join the back of the line. However the team on the Kingside will not gain a point! There is a maximum 8 sec between two rally’s. The referee will closely monitoring this. During the rally, current beach volleyball rules apply.
