Team Ireland Enjoy Medal-Filled Weekend Across Court and Sand
It was a hugely successful weekend for Team Ireland, with the senior indoor squads impressing at the BVF Invitational Cup on home soil while Ireland’s rising beach volleyball stars claimed bronze medals at the U17 SCA Beach Volleyball Championships in Wales.
Senior Teams Shine at the BVF Invitational Cup
Hosted by Ireland, this year’s BVF Invitational Cup brought together senior teams from England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, and Ireland for a weekend of high-quality international volleyball.
Both the Irish senior men’s and women’s teams made the perfect start to their campaigns with confident victories over Northern Ireland on the opening day.
Day two saw Scotland provide the next challenge, with a place in the gold medal match on the line for both Irish sides.
The senior women produced a spirited performance in one of the matches of the tournament. After battling all the way to a deciding fifth set, they were heartbreakingly edged out, leaving their hopes of reaching the final dependent on a victory over England. Ireland started strongly by taking the opening set, but England responded well to claim the next three sets and secure a 3-1 win.
The senior men, meanwhile, delivered one of their strongest performances of the weekend, sweeping Scotland 3-0 to book their place in the gold medal match.
On the tournament’s final day, the women’s team finished on a high with another excellent victory to secure a well-deserved third-place finish.
The men’s final against England proved to be a fiercely contested encounter. Ireland pushed their opponents throughout the opening two sets and showed their quality in every phase of the game. Although England ultimately claimed the title, Ireland earned an outstanding silver medal after an excellent tournament performance.
Beach Volleyball Success in Wales
While the senior teams were competing at home, Ireland’s next generation of beach volleyball players were making their international debuts on the sand at the U17 SCA Beach Volleyball Championships in Wales.
The girls’ pairing of Carmel Conway and Clara Coutinho produced several memorable performances throughout the competition. Displaying impressive consistency, excellent technical play, and remarkable composure under pressure, they capped off a fantastic tournament by defeating a more experienced Icelandic pair to claim the bronze medal.
In the boys’ competition, Riccardo Curci and Rafael Ewen entered the championship as one of the youngest teams in the field and will still be eligible to compete at this age category next year. After a nervous start and consecutive defeats to the eventual finalists, the pair settled into the tournament and began to showcase the quality of volleyball they are capable of playing. Their determination and steady improvement were rewarded with a bronze medal in what was their first international tournament together.
Across both indoor and beach volleyball, the weekend highlighted the continued progress of Irish volleyball at every level. With a senior silver medal, and two U17 beach bronze medals, Team Ireland returns from an outstanding weekend with plenty of confidence and optimism for the months ahead.
