Texeira & Workman Take Gold

Ivo Teixeira & Jonathan Workman claimed victory at a blustery Bettystown Beach in the VLY Beach Tour 3* event last weekend.

The dynamic duo overcame a determined Edgar Valavicius & Felipe Viana 21-15, 21-10 to claim their first win of the season and storm up the rankings table. The men in orange were perhaps the most confident pair playing in difficult winds, adapting with relative ease.  This was reflected in the results as they swept aside Pawel Iwinksi & Adam Polkowksi 21-7, 21-7 in game 1.

They didn’t have it all their own way in Game 2 though, where the young pairing of Cian Humphreys & Cillian O’Riordain took them deep in set 1 (21-17) before experience showed and the gold medallists ran away 21-7 in set 2.

Iwinski & Polkowski then saw off the u20s from Ennis 21-17, 21-7 to set up a bronze medal showdown with Valavicius & Viana. The 2Vs were too strong however and despite a close first set 21-19, quality ran out 21-8 in set 2.

The Women’s section was highly competitive with Melissa Cheviron and Lu Sombrah claiming victory – again experience showing in difficult conditions. The pair had to get passed the Guobyte sisters twice on the day, winning the Final 21-10, 21-17 after they’d earlier won their pool stage match in the day’s best game – 28-26, 20-22, 15-10.

Miriam Gormally & the returning Alex Graves took bronze defeating the previous event winners Lina Dzurnak & Paola Rosas 21-18, 21-14. The 4th places a little tired after a gruelling semi-final loss to the Champions in three sets.

UCD’s Regina Halpin & Fiona Lamont finished 5th after a comfortable win over u18 stars Grace Moloney & Laura Connolly – who were competing in their first 3* event.
