The Cup is Back!

The Volleyball Association of Ireland Cup returns this weekend, with 14 tantalising ties across the Men’s and Women’s Competitions.

The pick of the ties in the Men’s draw is the Gardians derby between Fianna and Masters, whilst DVC Abu host Dalkey Devils in the only all-Premier Division match up. Bravo have a tricky trip across the N7 to Tallaght Rockets – a potential banana skin.

Newcomers to the National League Santry Fusion have a tough trip to last year’s runners-up Aer Lingus. Elsewhere Munster Thunder host Balbriggan A, whilst the Balbriggan Broncos will fancy their chances at home to Kilkenny Spartans. In from and unbeaten SETU Carlow head west to Galway.

Defending champions UCD Men get a bye to round 2.

In the Women’s side, there’s a repeat of last year’s Shield final as Santry Calypso host DVC Lions. The Lions looking to avenge their five-set defeat.

In form Galway host UCD, in what will be a tough trip for the students. Galway have been strengthened by the signing of Mikal O’Boyle and Amy O’Sullivan this season, and currently sit top of the pile in Division 1. The Volleyball Veterans will be looking to build on last season’s semi-final run as they take on Santry Sparks whilst SETU Carlow do battle with the Spartans. Santry Rebels host Premier Division Tallaght Rockets, as last year’s runners-up Balbriggan start their campaign hosting Dalkey Devils. Gardians are already in the hat for Round 2.

The Cup Finals return to the traditional end-of-season slot, and will be held at the Sport Ireland Campus over the weekend of May 4/5.
