A Statement Performance Across the National Team Pathway
The 2026 St. Patrick’s Challenge proved to be a landmark day for Irish volleyball, as Ireland secured a historic 5-1 overall victory over Northern Ireland at TUD Tallaght.
With six matches played across the U18, U20, and Senior levels, the event once again showcased the strength of the Ireland – Northern Ireland rivalry, but this year, it also highlighted the clear progress of Volleyball Ireland’s High Performance pathway.
A Day of Results
Ireland set the tone early and carried momentum throughout the day, delivering strong performances across almost every fixture.
U18 Men Lead the Way
The U18 Men opened the day in impressive fashion, securing a commanding straight-sets victory:
Ireland U18 Men 3–0 Northern Ireland U18 Men
(25:21, 25:11, 25:10)
Fresh from their recent success at the U18 SCA Championship, the squad continued their strong form, combining composure with attacking efficiency to control the match from start to finish.
U18 Women Fall to Strong NI Side
The U18 Women faced a well-organised Northern Ireland team, who produced a strong performance to take the match:
Northern Ireland U18 Women 3–0 Ireland U18 Women
Despite the result, the Irish side showed moments of promise and will take valuable lessons from the experience.
Senior Women Continue Their Dominance
The Senior Women built on last year’s success, where they secured Ireland’s only win, with another dominant performance:
Ireland Senior Women 3-0 Northern Ireland Senior Women
(25:13, 25:14, 25:19)
Displaying confidence in attack and discipline in defence, the squad delivered a composed and controlled performance as they continue preparations for their SCA Championship in Andorra this June.
Senior Men Deliver Statement Win
The Senior Men followed with one of the most competitive matches of the day. After a dramatic opening set, Ireland found their rhythm to close out the match in three:
Ireland Senior Men 3-0 Northern Ireland Senior Men
(31:29, 25:23, 25:21)
Having fallen short in last year’s Challenge, this result marks a significant step forward for the group as they build towards their SCA campaign in Northern Ireland this June.
U20 Women Make Their Mark
In their first meeting with Northern Ireland, the U20 Women delivered a strong performance to secure victory:
Ireland U20 Women 3-1 Northern Ireland U20 Women
(25:19, 24:26, 25:22, 25:18)
The match was competitive throughout, but Ireland showed resilience and composure to take control in the key moments.
U20 Men Close the Day in Style
The U20 Men rounded off the day with another impressive win, continuing the momentum built through the Fás Éireann programme:
Ireland U20 Men 3-1 Northern Ireland U20 Men
(28:26, 25:13, 23:25, 25:15)
The squad demonstrated their development, particularly in high-pressure moments, reflecting the progress made over the course of the season.
A Reflection of Progress
This year’s 5-1 result marks a significant turnaround from previous editions of the Challenge, where Ireland experienced several narrow defeats across different age groups.
The improvement across all squads is no coincidence.
Programmes such as Fás Éireann, which has seen national teams compete regularly against Premier and Division 1 clubs, have provided players with the consistent match exposure needed to close the gap at international level.
From the U18 Men’s continued success, to the Senior teams delivering composed performances, the impact of this approach is becoming increasingly visible.
Building Towards the International Stage
The St. Patrick’s Challenge also serves as a key milestone in the international calendar:
-
U18 Men now turn their attention to the European Championship Qualifiers in Romania later this month
-
Senior Women prepare for their SCA campaign in Andorra (June)
-
Senior Men will compete in the SCA in Northern Ireland (June)
-

A Growing Event
Beyond the results, the event once again highlighted the strength of the volleyball community in Ireland.
A fantastic crowd at TUD Tallaght created an electric atmosphere throughout the day, with supporters playing a key role in driving the teams forward.
Volleyball Ireland would also like to thank:
-
