U18 Men Compete in European Qualifiers in Romania

Ireland’s U18 Men’s National Team returned from Romania following their participation in the CEV U18 Men’s 2nd Round European Championship Qualifiers, marking another important step forward for Irish volleyball on the European stage.

Facing strong opposition in Romania, Greece, and Estonia, the squad embraced the challenge of competing at a level that many of these nations experience far more regularly.

From the opening match, it was clear this tournament would demand a new level of performance.

Ireland began against Greece, producing a strong and competitive display, particularly in a tight opening set that could have gone either way, (25-23). It set the tone for a week where the team would continue to push, compete, and test themselves against higher-ranked opposition.

Matches against hosts Romania and Estonia followed, each presenting different styles and challenges. Across all three games, Ireland showed moments of quality, resilience, and growing confidence.

Despite the 3-0 losses, the results alone don’t tell the full story of the tournament.

The squad faced a number of challenges throughout the week, including injuries in the lead-up to the competition and illness during the tournament itself. Despite this, the players continued to step up, support one another, and compete with determination in every match.

That ability to stay together and keep fighting is a defining trait of this group.

What stood out most across the three matches was the competitiveness of the performances.

Against teams who operate at this level consistently, Ireland showed they are closing the gap, not just physically, but mentally and tactically. Long rallies, improved defensive structure, and confidence in attack all pointed towards a team that is growing into the demands of European competition.

Much of this progress can be linked back to the work being done within Volleyball Ireland’s High Performance pathway, including the Fás Éireann programme, which has given players consistent exposure to high-level match environments throughout the season.

This group leaves Romania with:

  • Greater belief
  • A clearer understanding of the level required
  • And a strong foundation to build on

The journey does not end here.

With continued development, increased exposure, and the right opportunities, this squad, and Irish volleyball as a whole, continues to move forward.

The results may not have gone Ireland’s way, but the direction is clear.
And the belief is growing.
